A patchwork of shattered ice chunks as big as 10 square metres were left behind when an 'intermittent' lake dried up for the winter.

Freelance photographer Bor Slana, 40, captured the extraordinary natural phenomenon at Lake Cerknica in Slovenia.

The chunks of ice, which can weigh several hundred kilograms, are left behind when the water below them drains away through subterranean caverns and reservoirs beneath the lake.
