An engineer who struggled to conceal his engagement ring when he prepared to propose to his girlfriend has invented a box which is just over 1cm thick. Romantic Marvin Velazquez, 35, said he was unable to use an ordinary-sized ring box because she would have seen it on him.

He therefore placed the ring, which cost £8,600, in his pocket on its own but worried the entire time about fumbling it, losing it or even scratching it. He had arranged to take her on a romantic dinner cruise in Marina Del Rey, California, in April 2010 and planned to propose on the boat with the cushion cut diamond ring, which had a platinum setting.
