A sprightly pensioner who turned 95 earlier this year has revealed an unlikely secret to staying sharp in old age - playing ping pong. Active Rita Tanner shuns knitting or bingo in favour of weekly games of table tennis and goes up against opponents nearly half her age.

The former secretary first took up the sport as a teenager during the 1930s but stopped playing during World War Two.

And it was not until nearly 70 years later that Mrs Tanner rekindled her love of table tennis after joining an exercise class for over fifties. She now plays every Thursday near her home in Fawley, near Southampton, Hants, and is encouraging other pensioners to give the sport a try. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.
