SN_SPRING_CHICKS_1.jpg
A trio of chicks hitch a ride on their mother's back, keeping them safe from predators. The great crested grebe chicks, which are between three and four days old, are easy prey for other predatory birds that may try and attack and eat them.

The baby birds, which have distinctive black and white feathers and a red blotch on their heads, stay by their parents' sides until they have grown big enough to defend themselves. Rob Cross, a postman, captured these images of the family of birds yesterday and saw first hand the dangers the protective mother and her chicks can face. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.
