A panicked penguin narrowly escapes the gaping jaws of a hungry leopard seal as it beats it to the rocky shoreline. Fellow gentoo penguins desperately propel themselves from the icy water after a feeding excursion out at sea.
The seal, around three and a half metres in length, failed in its attempts to catch the penguins during the ordeal, which lasted around three hours. South African-born Ben Cranke, 49, spent the day photographing the large gentoo penguin colony on Cuverville Island, Antarctica. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.
