Ospreys nesting in the Scottish Highlands are feasting on huge numbers of rainbow trout in preparation for their migration to northern Africa - nearly 3,000 miles away. Ron McCombe, a professional wildlife photographer, captured the split second when the magnificent birds plucked the unwitting fish from quiet waters to feed to their young.
The ospreys - with their impressive 70in wingspan - fly some 30 to 40 feet above the clear water, scanning it for prey. They then make a sudden decision and 'drop like a stone' towards the quiet lake, grabbing the trout with their talons and leaving for their nest. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.
