Graphic designer Tim Nicol, 57, photographed this hummingbird as it visited his garden built by Tim and his partner Jola at their home in Republic in Washington, USA.

The garden features various perches, feeders, native flowers and water features and the couple spend much of their time in the spring and summer months watching and photographing the visiting birds.

Tim said: “I liked this image because it is kind of a whimsical image of a real hummingbird perching on a fake hummingbird and I liked the blur of the hummingbirds wings to show motion and just how incredibly fast a hummingbird's wings beat, as fast as 200 flaps per second.”

“If you spend time watching hummingbirds you will find that they will return to a favourite perch time after time and this particular Black-chinned hummingbird likes to perch of the beak of this wooden hummingbird garden stake that we have up.”
