These magnificent waterbirds run in synchrony together across a shimmering lake in a mating ritual known as a 'water dance'. Set on the incredible Lake Hodges, about 30 miles north of San Diego in California, USA, a flock of black and white Western Grebes perform their unique dances during the peak of the mating season.
The swan-like birds, with their long slender necks and red eyes, gathered in their hundreds on the lake as they paired off before rushing across it together. Florida-based dentist Steven Kovacs, 52 and from Canada, is a keen photographer and travelled across America to capture the unique mating rituals on display here. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.
