An elephant throws a plume of dry dirt over its skin in order to protect itself from the harsh sun rays - in the same way we apply sunblock.

The large African elephant even appears to be teaching its baby the clever ritual which helps them tackle the incredibly high temperatures.

By throwing dirt and dust over themselves just after bathing they create what's like an extra layer of skin, protecting them from the 40 degrees Celsius heat.
