These lively monkeys leap in and out of steaming volcanic water to stay warm in snowy weather. The monkeys bathe in the 41 C natural volcanic springs during cold weather in Jigokudani, in Nagano, Japan.

Winters in Jigokudani, meaning "Hell's Valley", get as cold as -11C, but here hot jets of steam burst from the ground because the area is active with volcanic movement. Baby monkeys copy the adult females who leap into the water from the rocks in their hundreds.
