These spectacular patterns would appear to be viewed through a kaleidoscope - but are in fact close up photos of alcohol. The stunning photographs show drops of the Italian aperitif Aperol.

The bright orange beverage, which is popularly drunk before a meal, was left to dry on a glass slide before being photographed through a microscope. After the alcohol and water evaporates, the remaining sugars crystallise to produce the incredible patterns.
