These mesmerising patterns might appear otherworldly but are in fact extreme close up photos of maple syrup. The microscopic shots show the fascinating formations and colours in crystallised syrup the naked eye cannot see.

Photographer Bernardo Cesare put drops of the sugary condiment on glass slides and left them for over a week. During this period water from the droplets evaporated and the remaining sugars crystallised, causing the colourful patterns to form.
