Opium Poppy Field by Brian Terrey (7 images)
These stunning lilac flowers aren't just easy on the eye - they have pain-relieving properties for the whole body. Their seed pods are full of opiates which are used to make medicinal drugs for the NHS, including morphine and codeine. The opium poppy's real name, papaver somniferumroughly means the 'sleep-bringing poppy', because of its narcotic properties. It differs from the wild red poppy in colour and the more common plant contain no opiates at all.
