A small hazel dormouse is weighed in a plastic bag as part of a study into the species' dwindling population. The mice are preparing for hibernation and are weighed to monitor eating habits and assess whether they have eaten enough to survive the winter.

This one weighed around 28 grams - eight grams above the average of 20. The population of dormice in Britain has more than halved in the last 20 years due to climate change and shrinking habitats.
