Locals use their boats to mine from a bright pink lake - which has a salt content of up to 40 per cent. Lake Retba, known as "Lac Rose" by the French-speaking locals in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa, attracts a species of algae called Dunaliella Salina which turns the water pink.

The miners sell salt in little bags on the shore-line, as well as exporting it across the entire region, and have to protect their skin from the salty water with shea butter to prevent tissue...
