Pictured: The kingfisher with a fish it has caught.
This brightly coloured kingfisher looks like he has eyes bigger than his belly - as he swallows a fish the same size as him. The male kingfisher was spotted on a moss-covered branch three feet above the water with its catch, a sunbleak fish which he had speared in the water because it would not fit in its mouth.
The blue and orange kingfisher was photographed after a successful hunt catching sunbleak and stone moroko fish by diving into the water at high speeds. To eat its catch, the kingfisher will often beat the fish until it is dead before swallowing it whole.
Photographer Petar Sabol was at a fish pond near Palovec village, in Croatia, in the early morning to watch the birds. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.
