These close-up photos of weird and wonderful insects look like something from a sci-fi film.
Four of a jumping spider's eight eyes stare straight at the camera while the iridescent colours of beetles, bees and a deer fly can be seen in spectacular detail.
The insects and arthropods were photographed as part of scientific research documenting the different species and examining their behaviours, populations and trends.
Geoscientist and scientific photographer Mark Smith was able to get close to the insects by holding them in a glass crystal cuvette, a small tube sealed at one end often used by chemists. SEE OUR COPY FOR MORE DETAILS.
