Pictured: The salt mines glowing gold in the setting sun.
Dozens of glowing golden pools seem to make this the richest hillside in the valley. But in fact, these 'pools' are murky brown and white salt mines lit up by the evening sunset, a fraction of the price of gold.
There are over 3,000 individual evaporation ponds in this salt mine and the golden tint is a reflection of the sun as it sets behind the peaks of the valley. The mine in Maras, a town in the Sacred Valley, Peru, produces up to a huge 200 tonnes of salt every year. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.
