PECKISH! A mother bird encouraging her chicks to stretch their wings for the very first time gets a peck from the impatient youngster. This delicate coppersmith barbet was pictured in Dum Dum Cantonment, West Bengal, India.
Photographer Prasenjit Dutta said, "The chick was nipping at the parent's feathers. The parent bird would often approach her chicks with and without food and would pull back as the chicks emerged from the nest. The chick then pulled on the mother’s feathers to get closer.”
“Such behaviour is observed only when the mother bird wishes to introduce her chicks to the outside world in an attempt for them to leave the nest.”
